The Autism program and Language Arts department at VH invite the community to partner with our 6th graders and read the book "Anything But Typical" by Nora Raleigh Baskin during the month of April. Please use this blog's comment section to capture thoughts and conversation you are able to have with your students and the community throughout this project. It really struck me when he was describing the need to be on his computer in the library. He knew the librarian wanted him to say something when she was trying to get him to say thank you, he just wasn't sure what she wanted him to say and why. It makes you see the very subtle and somewhat nonsensical things we do culturally that could be so difficult for someone with autism. Like offering a thank you to someone who doesn't really deserve one just to be polite.
